Last Chance
After my final day's flying here last season, I was under strict orders from the boss not to land out on our last day this year, particularly if it involved anywhere called Sollieres. The forecast, however, indicated good conditions at Briancon and the Maurienne, which was enough for me to ignore Ariane's advice and plan a trip to the col de Carro. Martin was directed by Ariane to sit behind me in order to prevent me from doing anything rash.

Chabriere

Not much chance of that, as things turned out. Despite an abundance of juicy 9000ft cumulus clouds over the hills and valleys, we were unable to climb high enough to escape the cuvette, much to my intense irritation. After a misguided attempt to soar the cretes des Selles, we were forced into landing back and having a second go. We guessed that there must have been a stable layer some way below cloudbase, which reduced our climb rates to such a level that we were persuaded to try elsewhere, with equally frustrating results.

It was 5pm before we found the correct combination of four-letter words to unlock the route to cloudbase, by which time it was clear that any attempt on the col de Carro would result in tears.  So, instead, we zipped over to Dormillouse, Morgon, Guillaume and Chabriere, with the intention of exploring the western Ecrins. Finding difficulty there also, we cut our losses and enjoyed a fine run down the parcours to Beynes, where we found what appeared to be a sea-breeze front pointing the way safely to St Auban and home.
