Today's flight
kicked off very much like yesterday's, with a loose plan to fly down to
Vinon and back up towards the parcours. Ariane was the boss today and we
managed a fairly easy getaway from launch and followed the now
well-trodden path to Authon, la Bigue, Cousson, Beynes and Serre
Montdenier to the lac Ste Croix. Cloudbase was about 8000ft and the
visibility was much improved since the day before. |
|
After turning Vinon
we came back north to the Serre Montdenier and straight onto the montagne
de Coupe. The parcours was working very well and we were quickly at
Dormillouse, then Morgon and Guillaume. In the St Crepin valley thermals
were rough and unpredictable, which was enough to raise suspicions of wave
and sure enough, a 10+ knot climb to 11,000ft near the tete d'Amont was
followed by a gentle entry into the wave system. |
Into the wave
|
Weak at first, the climb rate eventually
improved as we got into the wave system proper and we eventually saw climb
rates of up to 5 knots. At 14,000ft we decided to fly over the top of the
Ecrins for an easy route home, threading ourselves between cumulus tops on
the way. |

Man's work

Another fabulous
soaring day was topped off with a barbecue at the Pegasus clubhouse, which
included a salad starter, lamb and merguez with potatoes for the main
course, cheese, wine and a model aeroplane display. The food was of
excellent quality and the whole evening set us back all of 6€ per
person... |
