The north-westerly wind had dropped in strength and today's thermals were better organised and easier to use, although because the air was now very dry, blue conditions prevailed. Some pilots consequently had difficulty in leaving the cuvette (ie the Sisteron basin) but those that managed it found that the rocks and ridges worked as advertised, if not quite as well as they did two weeks ago.

Mont Chaberton

Robert and Ariane managed to fly to Dormillouse and then south via les Trois Evêches to the lac Ste Croix in a flight that was technically demanding at certain key points.

John, in his LS6, repeated parts of his Duo flight of yesterday. Guillaume continued not to work very well but instead of retreating to Chabriere he pressed on towards St Crepin, and ridge-soared away to find eventually a thermal that went to 10,500ft. Conditions in the Ecrins and the Queyras were blue with only scrappy Cu tops to indicate thermals.

John finally turned Mont Chaberton, to the north-east of Briancon - it was the only spot with a large enough cumulus to shelter under.

Returning over the top of the Queyras and with some north still in the wind John decided to top up near the col de Vars and then fly along the ridges to the south of the lac de Serre-Ponçon directly to Morgon rather than attempt to soar the poorly performing Guillaume. It worked and although Morgon and then Dormillouse were reached well below their ridge lines there was enough lift available to get home.
