Flying near to the terrain is an exciting part of the mountain experience, though it isn't obligatory to make the shadow the same size as the glider*. Flying this close comes down to personal experience and ability, mental alertness, weather and other traffic. My message would be: if in doubt, then don't. And always have a plan B.
